Over the last decade mobility has come to occupy a central role in business communication. Mobile access was once confined to top executives who had their own devices in order to be available for the business at all times.
Now however, it is an important part of the job for employees in many roles ranging from technicians, consultants, salesmen or developers. In fact the business environment is changing so that the number of employees who require a desk phone is dwindling rapidly.
As business organizations transition to VoIP – whether on-site or hosted – they face the challenge of integrating mobile access into their networks. Some companies issue corporate devices for their employees while others allow them to use personal phones/tablets.
Organizations that are more security conscious place a strict limit on the type of device that can be used on the network but many companies allow workers to use any device as long as it supports the VoIP soft phone clients.
Android or iOS?
Whether a particular device has been issued by the company or is a personal phone of the employee, most of them run either the Android or iOS mobile operating system.
In the past, organizations faced a lot of obstacles and hassle in getting different types of devices working with their enterprise voice system. It often required changing multiple configuration settings, redesigning parts of the system and other workarounds in order to get the system functioning and even then not very smoothly.
With VoIP those challenges no longer exist. Both Android and iOS support VoIP (since it is largely based on modern IP technology) which means that organizations no longer have to choose between one or the other or restrict employees to a certain type of device.
VoIP calls can be routed to any Android or iOS device. This allows employees to even use tablets (or potentially other devices without a calling plan) to receive and make calls.
Take the office with you
In general VoIP providers will offer Android and iOS clients that can be downloaded and installed on employees’ devices. As long as the enterprise security requirements are complied with (which can differ between businesses), there is nothing more that needs to be done in order to receive/make VoIP calls through the app.
These apps allow workers to access many VoIP settings from the mobile device itself such as call settings, turning features on/off etc.
There are many advantages to be able to use VoIP on mobile devices. For one thing employees no longer have to give out their personal mobile number to customers or other business partners. They can receive calls on their office extension, regardless of location.
Additionally calls can be transferred to colleagues or other departments without the caller having to dial another number (which generally increases frustration). Workers can also set presence information so that team members can instantly see who is available to attend a meeting or take a service call.
As deployment costs continue to decline and with vendors continuously offering innovative new services/features, VoIP is quickly becoming the preferred choice of communication technology for the majority of businesses.
